UNCERTAINTY
For ages, people have always tried to make sense of life through science, religion and philosophy. These fields aim to answer big questions like:
What is the meaning of life?
What is the nature of reality?
How should we live our lives?
But why?
Why do we strive for clarity, though the beauty often lies in uncertainty?
Why do we strive for clarity, though the beauty often lies in uncertainty?
When not on set, I spend most of my time in nature. To me, nature is where I get to see life's undeniable beauty and truth. Everything is real. Nothing is made up.
That's probably also why I love shooting documentaries so much. Whether I am trekking through the woods or witnessing a beautiful moment unfold right before the camera, both experiences are ultimately about being present. And it's when I am fully present, I am the happiest.
For some time, I've been taking a drone on my hikes, and I would like to share one particular shot with you today:
I am pretty surprised by how deep this one clip got me thinking. Here's to more of it! As Alex Supertramp so beautifully puts it:
”Rather than love, money, faith, fame, fairness, give me truth.”
”Rather than love, money, faith, fame, fairness, give me truth.”
And I couldn't agree more! This quote comes from one of my all-time favourite books about Chris McCandless, a young man who walked deep into the Alaskan wilderness to seek enlightenment through solitude and contact with nature. Get a copy of the book here, or watch the film here if you haven't done so already.
To me, life is about being fully present and dedicating ourselves to the things we love. It is our responsibility to design a life that truly aligns with our essence, offering the best chance of fulfilment and significance. Just as the seasons change, so do we, and the key to growth is staying aware and adapting to both our personal transformations and the world around us.
Whether that's really the meaning of life, I don't know, but it is how I like to approach it ;)
How about you? How do you make sense of your life matters? And where does art fit in? Don't hesitate to share your thoughts with me on Instagram or via E-Mail.
Before you depart, I'd like to offer you a few lines from Annie Dillard that provide a poignant perspective:
"...the idea was to learn things; that you learn a thing and then as a matter, of course, you learn the next thing, and the next thing... As I spoke, he nodded precisely in the way that one nods at the utterances of the deranged. "...And then," I finished brightly, "you die!"
Thanks for reading. Take care*,
